The Listening Circle

The Listening Circle is a youth-led education programme that runs student support circles in public schools in Guwahati and other towns of India. These circles hope to ensure that there is a safe space for youth to learn how to express their feelings and talk about what creates stress for them. The circle offers tools and new perspectives for them to find their way to dealing with their stress.

  • Identifying emotions

  • Understanding stress, worry, and happiness

  • Breaking myths and stigma surrounding mental health

Building Mental Health Awareness

Introduce students to the basics of mental well-being through age-appropriate stories, games, discussions, and visual activities. Children learn to identify different emotions, understand that all feelings are valid, and recognize when they may need support.

Express

Creating Safe Spaces for Conversation

Students participate in guided listening circles, creative activities, role-playing, art, and journaling that encourage healthy emotional expression. Every child is given the opportunity to share without fear of judgment while also learning to listen with empathy and respect.

Empower

Focus Areas:

  • Healthy coping strategies

  • Problem-solving and resilience

  • Asking for help

  • Peer support and kindness

Developing Lifelong Well-being Skills

Students leave each session with practical strategies they can use in everyday life. They learn simple coping techniques, how to seek help when needed, and how to support friends who may be struggling, creating a more compassionate school community.

Research

The programme spends time first understanding the background of the students- where they live, their immediate environment, what they are exposed to, the belief systems surrounding them, their culture, etc.
